Dreamwidth is a site/network similar to LJ, and run by two former LJ staff members. Their basic concept in creating DW was to build something like LJ, but without LJ's draconian (and not entirely rational) responses to whatever material someone decides is "objectionable" this week.

The site is intended to run on a "breaks even" basis, so they expand the service based on what they can support. As their capacity increases, they release "invite codes to existing members, because new members need an invite code to join the site and set up an account. This process lets them manage site growth comfortably.

A good number of people who got upset with the way LJ is being run migrated over to DW. SInce Some of those people are friends of long standing, I joined DW to stay in touch. I rather like the fact to that I can make a post at DW and it will automatically be echoed on my LJ.
